The Drying Amazon

Increasing temperatures and decreases in soil water in the eastern Amazon would lead to a dramatic change in the landscape of the region – tropical forest would be replaced by savannah and water retention would reduce dramatically.

As the Amazon dries, areas are likely to see salinisation and desertification or agricultural land, which will see failing crop yields and livestock productivity impacting on food security.

The Amazon rainforest has a large impact on rainfall patterns in South America, as the Amazon disappears rainfall patterns and the disappearance of glaciers in the Andes are projected to significantly affect water availability for human consumption, agriculture and energy production.
