In 2008 the poster boy of climate change was placed on the endangered species list as its habitat or Arctic sea ice began vanishing from beneath the paws of the polar bear.
The IPCC published a report in 2007 that predicted between a fifth and a third of all species on Earth could be at risk of extinction by the end of this century – some scientists predict that this figure could be as high as fifty per cent of species – this scale of species loss is high enough to be considered as a mass extinction, which is the same scale that saw the dinosaurs disappear from our planet.
