We can further cut down the waste that we produce and send to landfill by reusing items or buying resuable products in the first place. So instead of throwing away your old computer, unused mobile phone or an unwanted gifts, why not sell it, give it to charity or pass it on via a sharing scheme. There are so many more options than chucking things into a bin and someone, somewhere will inevitably find a use for your rubbish! Helping the Community From charity shops, to schools to community groups there is always someone who can potentially benefit from receiving items you are looking to throw away. If you want to donate items such as clothes, DVDs or books why not visit the Charity Shop Locator to find your closest charity by simply entering your postcode. The UK discards around 15 million mobile phones a year. Send them in to Ibex Earth and we will use your phones to help us purchase areas of rainforest through the ‘Our World: Our Choice’ Campaign. Swap Shops The BBC cult classic, Swap Shop, is the inspiration for the next section of the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Guide. Do not worry Noel Edmonds is not about to try and persuade you to swap some of your most beloved items, instead if you have got an item you want to get rid of why not see if someone will take it off your hands via an online sharing scheme such as Ooffoo, FreeCycle or Give or Take. It’s a good method of reducing the 900 million items of clothing that we send to landfill sites each year! The Furniture Re-use Network (“FRN”) The FRN is the national co-ordinating body for 400 furniture and appliance re-use and recycling organisations across the UK, which collect a wide range of household items to pass onto people in need. Up to 2 million items per year are re-used and passed onto low income families and for more information visit the FRN Website . |
