CL:AIRE (Contaminated Land: Applications in Real Environments) is the independent UK body that promotes sustainable alternatives to disposing of waste in landfill sites by encouraging the use of innovative technologies to clean up contaminated land and groundwater.  This means soil can be “recycled” for use on its original site through a process known as remediation. CL:AIRE’s environmental goal is to make land and water fit for purpose – ready for community and business use.

There are an estimated 300,000 contaminated sites in England and Wales covering an area of 325,000 hectares, the legacy of historical activities dating back to the industrial revolution of the 18th century.  Sustainable remediation is a slow process and an ongoing regeneration challenge: since CL:AIRE was set up in 1999 as a not-for-profit company to work with industry, academia and government, 32,000 hectares have been successfully remediated.

Our independent experts assess remediation processes applied to contaminated sites, and CL:AIRE disseminates the results to promote industry learning and best practice.  We campaign for highest standards among industry practitioners through our nationally recognised qualifications scheme.  CL:AIRE also provides research and training for practitioners, and forges links with other countries interested in UK remediation methods to help identify solutions for them.

CL:AIRE builds meaningful partnerships with organisations and businesses that want to pursue shared objectives in land, water and the environment.  We welcome as members all individuals and companies interested or involved in regeneration, to support CL:AIRE’s vital role as a champion of sustainable remediation.
