A Documentary with a Difference In addition to raising money and directly supporting local and regional efforts to protect Mount Roraima and the Guiana Highlands, a major part of the Lost World Project is also raising awareness of the unique wildlife and landscapes of the lost world, and the need for urgent conservation action. By showing the unique wildlife of Mount Roraima, and the threats which the lost world faces, we hope to raise the profile of the lost worlds of the Guiana Highlands, and stimulate further conservation efforts, both regionally and internationally. With this goal in mind, in January 2010, Ibex Earth launched a UK wide fundraising competition to provide ten young adults with the opportunity to join the expedition and take part in what can only be described as the adventure of a lifetime. By working with over one hundred universities, Ibex Earth selected ten students who travelled with an acclaimed film crew to film a conservation documentary about the unique wildlife and threats of Mount Roraima. Along the way, The Lost World Project became one of the most talked about environmental projects for university students and young adults ever established – proving the success of this strategy in the project. The participants earned their place by fundraising to cover the cost of travelling to Mount Roraima, and succeeded in raising surplus funds which Ibex Earth donated to our conservation partners in Venezuela. Some of the fundraising undertaken was truly inspirational (cycling the length of the UK, walking non-stop across Hadrian's Wall and running three marathons in just three days). The ten participants who were selected to take part in the expedition left the UK for Mount Roraima on 20th August 2010 and returned home on 4th September 2010. During the 14 day expedition the participants formed part of the film crew that helped to capture some fantastic footage for the planned documentary, learnt about the conservation needs of the Guiana Highlands and Mount Roraima and travelled to the summit of the plateau that inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write his famous novel 'The Lost World'. The participants involvement in The Lost World Project was to ensure that the initiative was completely unique and provided us with the opportunity to visit 30 universities across the UK to give talks to over 2,000 students and really help to raise the profile of the conservation needs and threats currently facing the region where the project was based. The footage filmed on Mount Roraima is currently being edited into a fifty minute, broadcast quality documentary that will then be premiered at a high profile and event at the Royal Geographical Society on Tuesday 13th September 2011. The film will then be broadcast to a global television audiences, raising awareness of this unique region to millions of viewers. There are already pictures of the expedition up on the Ibex Earth Facebook site and we have been updating our regular blog with news and images from Mount Roraima too.
