2011 Lost World Project Expeditions In 2011 Ibex Earth travels back to Mount Roraima for two expeditions to the region that inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write one of the greatest adventure novels of all time - 'The Lost World'. And you can be part of it... We are looking for ten people to join us for each expedition and travel to South America's 'lost world' in April 2011. Both expeditions will be led by the star of BBC 2's 'Decade of Discovery', Stewart McPherson who is the world's leading expert on Mount Roraima. You will have the opportunity to learn about Mount Roraima's history, the current conservation threats that jeopardise this unique and ancient land and the wonderful species that live on the plateau's summit. This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Further more, your involvement in The Lost World Project will help us raise further funds for this conservation initiative and put in place the necessary sustainable infrastructure that will safeguard the long-term future of this remarkable plateau.
Dates and cost of joining the Expedition Saturday 2nd April 2011 - Tuesday 12th April 2011 And Saturday 16th April 2011 - Tuesday 26th 2011. The cost of joining either of The Lost World Expedition's is just £3,000 - this includes your flight to Caracas, Venezuela, all of your travel and food whilst on the expedition and accommodation. No other organisation provides you with the opportunity to travel to Mount Roraima with the star of a BBC 2 documentary and we expect the places on the expedition to be taken up quickly. Your chance to visit Mount Roraima and help save the ‘Lost World’ As part of Ibex Earth’s award winning conservation initiative, ‘The Lost World Project’, we would like to invite you to join us in travelling to South America’s ‘lost world’ where you will be able to experience the unique animals, plants and landscapes of Mount Roraima first hand. You will be part of an eleven day, ten person strong expedition, which is led by Stewart McPherson and will take in the beautiful Kama Waterfall and the world famous Jasper Creek – a riverbed made of scarlet, semi precious gemstone. You will then follow the path of the first European explorers to reach Mount Roraima’s summit one hundred and twenty five years ago. Throughout the expedition team members will be on the lookout for new species of flora and fauna. After your time on the summit you will see exactly what caused a British newspaper (‘The Spectator’) in 1877 to describe Mount Roraima as “one of the greatest marvels and mysteries of the Earth.” You will see for yourself just why the famous plateau inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to envisage prehistoric life and lost human civilizations. And most importantly of all you will take back memories that will last a lifetime. For more information about the expedition's itinerary please download the booklet on the right of the page.
How this Expedition makes a difference By taking part on this not-for-profit expedition, you will have the adventure of a life time, and at the same time, help Ibex Earth to continue raising money to fulfil the specific aims and objectives of The Lost World Project, to safeguard the long-term future of Mount Roraima. By taking part in the expedition your money will help us to raise the necessary funds to put in place the necessary infrastructure and training that is required to combat the current trait of unsustainable and unregulated tourism, the introduction of foreign plant and animal species and the growing threat of illegal gold mining. All those who take part in the expedition will be invited as special guests to the premiere of the Lost World Project documentary at the Royal Geographical Society on June 30th 2011. This event promises to be one of the most talked about environmental events of 2011.
Ecologically Sensitive Tourism We will operate the tour with an emphasis on ecologically sensitive tourism through responsible behaviour towards the environment. We provide the maximum benefit to the local communities by involving them in all activities and the expedition will use locally produced fresh produce, buying from local villages at every opportunity.
